Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder operation) and bile duct exploration

Surgery Type

Dr Chuah uses a minimally invasive approach to gallbladder surgery, which can result in less pain, scarring, and faster recovery times for patients.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy and bile duct exploration are minimally invasive surgical procedures, performed to treat gallbladder conditions and related complications. A laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the removal of the gallbladder, while bile duct exploration involves the examination and treatment of bile ducts to remove blockages or stones.

These procedures are commonly performed to treat gallstones, inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis), and bile duct obstruction. Gallstones can cause severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and in some cases, complications like infection or pancreatitis.

During laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the surgeon makes several small incisions in the abdomen and inserts a thin, flexible tube with a camera (laparoscope) to view the surgical area on a screen. The gallbladder is carefully detached from its surrounding structures, and then removed through one of the incisions. If necessary, bile duct exploration is performed using a similar approach, with instruments inserted through the laparoscope to examine the bile ducts and remove any blockages or stones.

Patients can expect to stay in the hospital for 1-2 days following the surgery, with pain management and a modified diet provided to ensure comfort and proper healing. The recovery period varies but most patients can return to their normal activities within 1-3 weeks. It is essential to follow a specific care plan provided by your healthcare team, which may include dietary modifications and medication adjustments to support the healing process and prevent complications.

It is crucial to follow your surgeon’s recommendations and attend follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and address any concerns or complications that may arise.
