Brisbane Gastro-Oesophageal Surgery

Laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery / laparacoscopic hiatus hernia repair revision surgery

Surgery Type

This minimally invasive procedure is used to treat gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), a condition in which stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus, causing heartburn and other symptoms.

Laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery, also known as fundoplication, and laparoscopic hiatus hernia repair, are minimally invasive procedures performed to treat gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and repair hiatus hernias, respectively. Dr Chuah is experienced in laparacoscopic hiatus hernia repair for all sizes of hernias, including very large and intrathoracic hiatus hernias.

Both of these surgeries aim to alleviate symptoms and improve the patient’s quality of life.

GORD is a condition where stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus, causing heartburn and other discomforts.

Hiatus hernias occur when a portion of the stomach pushes through the diaphragm into the chest cavity. These hernias can contribute to GORD and may require surgical intervention if they become large or cause significant symptoms.

During the laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery, the surgeon makes several small incisions in the abdomen. A thin, flexible tube with a camera (laparoscope) is inserted, allowing the surgeon to view the surgical area on a screen. The top part of the stomach (fundus) is wrapped around the lower oesophagus to strengthen the barrier between the stomach and oesophagus, reducing acid reflux.

For laparoscopic hiatus hernia repair, the surgeon uses similar techniques to access the hernia site. The stomach is gently repositioned back into the abdominal cavity, and the opening in the diaphragm (hiatus) is repaired using sutures. An anti-reflux procedure will be performed at the same time to further reduce reflux symptoms.

Patients can expect to stay in the hospital for 1-3 days following surgery. Pain management and a modified diet may be provided to ensure comfort and proper healing.

The recovery period varies, but most patients can return to their normal activities within 2-4 weeks. Lifestyle changes and ongoing medical management may be necessary to maintain the best possible outcome.

It is essential to follow your surgeon’s recommendations and attend follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and ensure a successful recovery.
