Thoracoscopic / Laparoscopic 2-Stage or 3-Stage Oesophagectomy

Surgery Type

Oesophagectomies are surgeries to remove part or all of the oesophagus. Oesophagectomies are used to treat conditions such as oesophagus cancer.

Thoracoscopic / laparoscopic 2-stage or 3-stage oesophagectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed to treat oesophagus cancer. This advanced technique involves removing a portion of the oesophagus, or the entire oesophagus, depending on the extent of the cancer. The stomach is anastomosed to healthy oesophagus in the chest or neck to allow patients to be able to eat. The aim of the surgery is to eliminate cancerous tissue within the oesophagus.

The procedure is typically recommended for patients with oesophagus cancer, where cancerous cells are primarily confined to the oesophagus and have not spread extensively to other organs. The goal is to remove the affected tissue and restore normal digestive function.

During thoracoscopic / laparoscopic oesophagectomy, the surgeon makes several small incisions in the chest and abdomen. A thin, flexible tube with a camera (laparoscope) is inserted through one of the incisions, allowing the surgeon to view the surgical area on a screen. Specialised instruments are used to remove the necessary portion of the oesophagus, after which the remaining parts are reconnected to maintain digestive continuity.

Patients can expect to stay in the hospital for one or two weeks following the surgery. Pain management and a temporary feeding tube will be provided to ensure proper nutrition and comfort.

The recovery period varies, a modified diet and lifestyle changes will be necessary to adjust to the new configuration of the digestive system.

It is essential to follow your surgeon’s recommendations and attend follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and ensure the best possible outcome.
